| Malcolm please let's get one thing straight: this thread began because of a news item on the forum and I naively thought it was a minor issue that would be sorted very quickly and that we had all misunderstood the Council's intentions. How wrong can one be. No information was forthcoming from the Council or you at the time. I recall particularly asking the question on this thread as to what would happen to both West Hill and Alvering Libraries if you were to open a town centre library in Wandsworth, barely half a mile away from each of these locations and this wasn't alluded to at all by yourself until the Committee papers became available to the public a few days before the Committee meeting that voted for your policy. As to not mentioning this new library in leaflets: until detailed plans are available and have been assessed by both council officers and English Heritage how can you be so certain that the library will open in the Courthouse. It has already been established that the overall floorspace is far more restricted than at other town centre libraries, for example. You appear to be accusing the Wandsworth Museum Campaign Group of not keeping discussions between themselves and the Council confidential. I can assure you that no-one from the Group has passed on any details of recent negotiations. As far as the idea of using Putney Library as a location for the Museum is concerned, as appeared in last week's Wandsworth Borough News, this 'leak' did not come from the Campaign Group. It is no-one's interests to talk about possible solutions to the problem until both parties are in agreement. The reason why so many of us are raising questions is because you have never beeen open and honest with us. If you had then a middle way might already have been found through negotiation. Many of us feel completely railroaded by your actions (shades of one T. Blair). I'm sure I speak for us all that we still hope 'meaningful' discusssions are possible that will result in a positive solution and that you and the Council are willing to meet us at least halfway in order to preserve Wandsworth Museum for future generations. |
