| Just rambling on to keep me occupied before going to bed (I have an appointment with a specialist tomorrow morning to look at my legs, which become weaker every day. Wish me luck!) In a fairly free country like ours, one is wasting one's time going out on a limb. eg it got James Goldsmith and his policies precisely nowhere. To influence affairs, you have to reach a fairly senior position in a business or the Civil Service or a charity or whatever, and in politics, and then, eg Robin Cook, it is no help just opposing, you have to persuade a lot of your colleagues to go with you to make any difference. We don't want dictatorship, so the only alternative is some consensus. And trying to reach a consensus, even if individuals have to follow policies which they don't fully agree with, is the only way to get any action - hence political parties. Just the same as in any group. |
