| Martin, You are so right about our Putney Councillors and their failure to take part in the discussions about Councillor Grimston's determination to close down Wandsworth's excellent Museum. My understanding is that they really don't agree with what he is doing - but they can't quite bring themselves to say it! I can understand this if you are a new Councillor, and we have rather a lot of those. For example, Councillors Lucy Allen, Jenny Nickels and Rosemary Torrington are all new and still learning the ropes at the town hall. They are members of the Environment and Leisure Committee, which, at its meeting on 6 February, considered Councillor Grimston's closure proposal. Councillor Grimston was there to watch what they did and he made it very clear in his comments to the meeting just how he expected them to vote at the end of the debate. They did what they were told - this was very clear to all of us at that meeting and who followed the proceedings closely. I really felt quite sorry for them! The next test of the Councillors' resolve on this issue will come at the full Council meeting on Wednesday 28 March when the matter is expected to come up for a vote. We must all hope that enough Councillors summon up the courage to do what is right - and not fall for Councillor Grimston's false case for the Museum's closure. Let's all be there to see just what happens! |
