| A few more questions for our unusually silent Cllr Grimston: 1. Paper 07-169 on the proposed closure of West Hill and Alvering Libraries and their amalgamation in the Court House makes the statement (para 11) that the floor area in the new town centre library will be larger than Balham Library. Balham Library currently employs 12 full-time staff while the new Library in Wandsworth will be staffed by only 8 full-time staff (para 15). The Court House, with its many floors and small rooms will need even more staff, not less. Is this another example of Cllr Grimston's idea of improved service? Or is it further evidence (if such were needed) that he and his department have cobbled together these Heath Robinson proposals with so little thought that they cannot withstand even the most superficial scrutiny? 2. Putting up exhibitions at the Museum requires a large workshop with woodworking tools, digital scanning and printing equipment as well as facilities for planning layouts and installing lighting, temperature and humidity controls. Where will these facilities be situated in his "museumlets" and where are the trained, experienced staff required to operate them? 3. Is he aware of the success of Hounslow CIP, a leisure trust formed in 1998 that has to date secured savings of £4.5 million and £5m in grants since its establishment as a not-for-profit social enterprise? Or is this the sort of innovative solution he refuses to consider when he is busy "thinking outside the box"? I am not holding my breath for any answers to my questions as they would no doubt publicly embarrass Cllr Grimston and his department. |
