| In my opinion, no-one intelligent could really believe that Cllr Grimston’s proposals, re-breaking up the museum and distributing the contents haphazardly around the borough, will benefit the community … which either makes his sincerity or intelligence questionable. Why wouldn’t he be insincere? What alternative does he have? He intends to sell our cultural assets but needs a fig-leaf to cover the embarrassment, and give the illusion of comfort to the uneasy councillors who can tuck it under their pillows to help them sleep more easily at night. Murmur after me…’we are bringing culture to the wider community …we are bringing…zzz’ Culture is the soft option for cuts but he can’t say so. But he can say anything else however unreasonable because he has the power, and actually he doesn’t care what we think as long as he can sound vaguely plausible. I don’t think Councillor Grimston is unintelligent. On the contrary. He is a wily politician who goes into the arena metaphorically swinging at non-existent pugilists (no-one has been rude to him as far as I can see), pretending to do us good, while at the same time taking us all for a ride. The same can be said, rudely or otherwise, of most politicians. |
