| As a further response to Martin Hime's comment about writing to Councillors rather than asking questions on this Forum, I would just say that I am sure they read the comments but I note they are extremely selective in which ones they respond to. Look how little we have heard from Cllr Grimston since the OSC Committee meeting on Feb 6th when the closure plan was voted through in the presence of 100s of protesting (and disbelieving) borough residents. It is desperately frustrating to be told that the only way to save the museum is to raise large sums of money to cover running costs, without being given any assurance that it will exist after September. As Lucille asks "who will put money up for an institution which may not exist in a few months' time?". For the relatively small sums of money involved (less than 1/4% of the annual council budget or £3.40 per person per annum on the Council Tax) this shows a remarkable rigidity of approach. The Wandsworth Museum Campaign Group is trying very hard to find workable alternatives but the reason we have not been able to report any progress is that our discussions with councillors, verbal and in writing, are painfully slow. One suspects deliberately so on their part. Public pressure remains by far the best way to get them to concentrate their minds. We are fortunate that Sir John Tusa and Baroness Trumpington have spoken out against the council's plans. I am quite sure they would not have done so had we remained silent. |
