| Martin, Please do NOT be taken in by this Tory savings line. It will have credibility ONLY if they propose a Council Tax increase on Friday of this week of 5%. Anything less than that will be below any conceivable Council Tax capping level and will demonstrate that they could save the Museum and do not need to make savings in any other area. I think we can guarantee that after 3 years of Council Tax freeze and therefore real tax cuts, the Tories will go for an increase close to the current level of inflation, say 3.5%. That would mean that they are voluntarily giving up income equivalent to about 1.5% Council Tax - ironically the current annual cost of the Museum. It is a simple choice, which at his frankest Malcom Grimston occasionally admits to. Do you want to pay a slightly higher level of Council Tax, about £5 a year (10P a week), or do you want the Museum to close? Councillor Grimston was honest enough to give his answer but many of the rest of us don't agree. Tony Belton |
