| It's a shame that what has been a mature debate should sink to this kind of level. If it were my money we were talking about then there might be merit in these taunts, but it isn't. All over the country there are older people and others on fixed incomes whose lives are severely damaged by ever-growing council tax bills. Our approach is that we owe it to those people living in Wandsworth not to cane them more than necessary. I think Jonathan has come up with a good idea - if there are enough people in Wandsworth who believe the Museum does represent the very best thing the council could do with their money then they could finance it themselves, while not imposing an unfair burden on those who can't afford such luxuries or have other priorities. I do come back though to the point about democracy. The current Wandsworth administration has been absolutely consistent over many years in our approach to taxation and quality of service. As recently as last May local people had their opportunity to decide whether they liked that approach or wanted an alternative - there were plenty on offer. We now have a duty to continue to govern in line with their expectations. Maybe contributors to this strand might consider standing for election themselves, as I believe they might then get a more realistic picture of the pressures many of our less well-off fellow residents face every day. |
