| This doesn't mean that we can all lie down and wait to be railroaded, Adrian. There are dozens of unanswered questions - not the least being where is WBC finding the £1m to fund this state-of-the-art Wandsworth Town centre library? Also, if they sell off the other two library sites as they plan to when they close the libraries and make the De Morgan centre homeless, is this revenue supposed to be used to keep our Council Tax the lowest in the land - or will it be funding the Library instead? Meanwhile, none of us have seen the feasability study for converting the Courthouse into a state of the art 21st century library - by the time English Heritage agree/disagree with the proposals to convert the grade II listed building no doubt WBC will have given up on the idea and decide to sell the Courthouse so we end up losing not only the Museum and De Morgan Centre, but possibly three libraries in the Borough too. It's about time all our ward councillors stood up for us instead of being bullied into submission by senior members of the Council by the fact that national government has cut WBC's grant. This issue is not about money alone: at the very least they should a)all be asking the same questions regarding the future of the artefacts that their constituents own, b)reviewing the feasability study and reporting back to us, c) agreeing that more time needs to be given for all the suggestions we have raised to be investigated, therefore approving a 12 month delay in the decision to close the Museum. I respectfully suggest that tonight's meeting will be the perfect opportunity for those representing us on the Environment and Leisure Overview and Scrutiny Committee, (operative word being Scrutiny, in this case)to do so. |
