| I didn't realise this was a competition with cats....! Meanwhile, has everyone read this week's front page story in the Wandsworth Borough News with Councillor Lister's comments on the closure of the Museum? A little more informative than his standard email response to Jonathan and myself but just persuades me even more that the whole exercise is a done deal and that there is no intention nor ever was of consulting the people of Wandsworth. He states 'We have got the museum and it is nice, but if it is a choice between that and children's services it is not a priority. (Closing the museum) is a saving that can be made with little damage to our most vulnerable residents......most of the exhibits will be stored in three unused chapels, others will be placed in schools. The council is looking to develop a more comprehensive web-based history facility.' In addition, acording to the WBN, 'Councillor Malcolm Grimston said that the closure would be the first step towards getting culture back out into the community' Come on Malcolm, credit us with some intelligence - the Museum as a whole IS in the community, right at the heart of the Town Centre! But, if it can be divided up into each of the local libraries, that would at least be preferable to putting it into unused chapels if that really is one of the options you are considering. You also point out that the green plaque proposal will 'work to make the community more aware of its history' I'm sorry, much as I support the plaque system, I do not believe that children pay the slightest interest in them and within the historical context a local museum is of far more benefit in the long term to our community. Please can someone work out the figure of £400,000 divided by all the council tax payers ...then we would know exactly how much our tax would go up just to save the museum in its current format. |
