| Having announced that the contents of the Museum are to be stored in disused chapels in cemeteries, the Council has extended an open invitation to thieves. Valuable family archives, photographs and artefacts were donated to the Museum by individuals in the expectation that they would be cared for in a safe and controlled environment. I saw, for example, a valuable painting which was purchased only last year with a grant from the V&A and a very generous donation from an individual. What are the V&A and the benefactor going to say about the plan to deny public access to the painting? And what about insurance and the provision of security services for the chapels? This will be extemely expensive for the Council. I do think that there needs to be a measured rethink about the whole situation. |
