| An excellent, passionate, constructive thread! There's a document on the Wandsworth Council website called, "Enriching Lives - A Strategy For Culture In Wandsworth [it can be found at: http://www.wandsworth.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/erhrliiu64ha6ofzy3rd3fxensfk4edmpeardkkkkipppywqe2uwrntta3gwbydqby6mbizoma4qlvm2tfdyqkt56kg/csenrichinglives.pdf]. Page 3 of this document talks about the "importance of culture" in the following terms: "Culture is a vital ingredient in everyone’s life and is of growing importance to the future well-being of the borough. It is important for the sheer enjoyment it brings and its innate value in enhancing the quality of life for individuals. It can also have indirect benefits such as leading to healthier lives and lower levels of heart disease and stress. Being engaged and involved, particularly as a member of a group, helps to give a sense of purpose and belonging, and is a fundamental part of sustainable community life. It also links the past, present and future and so gives a sense of perspective to the everyday events of life." Surely a local museum such as ours has "innate value"? Surely it qualifies as helping people (particularly young ones) be "engaged and involved", fosters "a sense of purpose and belonging" and is perhaps the best way of linking "past, present and future" to give "a sense of perspective to the everyday events of life"? |
