| Rosemary, thank you for your suggestion. I think there are two issues at stake here: Firstly, Wandsworth library per se began in Putney Library so perhaps taking back each separate area of the borough's history and putting it in local libraries is certainly worth considering and a cheaper option than Malcolm's of asking the community to find £2m in four weeks. That is, until libraries themselves begin to be closed for lack of use?????? Secondly, and importantly - the lack of consultation with Wandsworth residents about the proposed closure of the Museum - it is disingenuous for Malcolm to say the council was elected with a mandate last year when many of us MIGHT have chosen to vote differently had we been aware that there was a possibility of the Museum closing. I may be a cynic but I believe that the idea of closing the Museum lies far more in the possible sale of the Courthouse building and the money that will bring in as much as to save costs of running it. If a new library is open in Wandsworth town centre what is going to happen to West Hill Library? Malcolm has not answered this and there obv will be no need for two libraries within a few hundred yards of each other... that also begs the question of what would happen to the unique De Morgan Centre if that building becomes surplus to requirements too. For those Putney Society members who have been reading this thread the issue regarding the future of Wandsworth Museum is being raised at the Executive next week. There isn't enough time to ask the whole membership what their views are, unfortunately, before the Council makes its decision early next month. Meanwhile, thanks to everyone so far who has made a positive contribution to this thread. I would suggest you continue to write in/email Councillor Lister direct to show that perhaps this isn't a silent majority? There is a link enabling you to do so on the page with the news item about the Museum closure. |
