| As I read the history, all departments of the Council were asked last year to find areas where money could be saved. The relevant department gave the closure of the Museum as a possibility. This was adopted by "the powers that be" and Councillor Heaster made the announcement that it should be closed to save £400,000 pa. That is understandable. But later the gloss was put on that the purpose was, not to save money basically, but to create a new wonderful Library right in the centre of Wandsworth Town. (This would, of course, bring in capital gains if the other two scorned lbraries were closed and the sites sold to developers). As I read the minutes of the recent Committee meeting, the Council officers are by no means yet sure that the present Museum site can indeed be converted to a library. Among other things, planning permission will be required (This is not a formality as planning permissions have to follow the law and can be appealed against. Some cases have to be approved by central Government). |
