| Malcolm I personally have no intention, nor ever had, of getting into a (personal) slanging match with you. I hope no-one else will fall into that trap. However I must take task over your assertion that we should be discussing 'the real benefits' of the changes. Challenges yes, particularly to those who are campaigning and trying to have a meaningful and positive dialogue with the Council. Although your fellow Conservative councillors are responding (to constituents who are voicing their concerns) that the proposals will mean culture will be made more widely available, this is all New Labour-style 'soundbites': How can you possibly defend a few static displays of a minimal number of artefacts (of which there are 10,000 to draw upon) applicable to one local area in each of five town centre libraries (Wandsworthiness, indeed!)against the vibrant tactile displays and education facility provided by a single entity Museum in the heart of the Borough. You and your fellow Councillors (Putney ones in particular, I'm sad to say) who are writing this are guiilty of misleading constituents. Your priority should be to listen to suggestions the Wandsworth Museum Campaign Group have made and be supportive of them by in the first instance finding a suitable single central borough location for the Museum if it has to move from the Court House. You should have held consultations with residents last year when you knew that the cost savings you wanted in order to provide funds for Tooting Library as well as your dream Wandsworth Town Centre Library were first thought about. |
