| Councillor Grimston is to be saluted for his single-minded dedication to reversing the "rather disappointing" number of visitors at West Hill Library. Who else would have the courage and imagination to propose shutting down a unique Museum that serves 44,000 visitors, outreach individuals and research enquiries each year just to encourage more library usage? Who else can see the benefits of demolishing the Borough-wide community and educational services provided by the Museum to make way for a library that is slightly more convenient for shoppers in the centre of Wandsworth? There are some who might say Councillor Grimston's logic is perverse. After all if "West Hill (Library) is just that annoying distance up the hill" as he states, moving it to the Courthouse will oblige current users of West Hill to make an equally annoying trek down the hill. This could well put a dent in Councillor Grimston's personal crusade to improve library usage but I am sure users of West Hill Library will happily walk the extra distance to ensure Councillor Grimston reaches his library usage targets. Given Councillor Grimston's selfless commitment to improving access to library services in the centre of Wandsworth, I have a suggestion which I am certain he will rush to support. Turn the Town Hall into a large central library - the courtyard is ideal parking for mothers and children, for the disabled and for the elderly. Move the Council to West Hill and if it proves too small to accommodate all the Councillors, house the overflow in some of the disused chapels that Councillor Grimston considers such a congenial destination for the Museum's collection of irreplaceable artefacts and memorabilia. Indeed, given Councillor Grimston's whole-hearted endorsement of the need for a central library in Wandsworth, I believe we can count on him being first in line to volunteer for an office in one of the disused chapels. |
