| I am dismayed to learn about the threat to close our Borough Museum. I remember the Museum being started in the small oak panelled room at Putney Library back in the 80's. The accommodation there was far too small and, of course, the location was not appropriate for a Museum serving the whole of Wandsworth. When the Old Court House, off Wandsworth High Street, across the road from the Arndale Centre, became available, it was adapted for the Museum. It provides an ideal setting for the excellent collection of wonderful material the Museum's dedicated staff have built up over the years. The splendid displays are always well worth a visit - whether the permanent displays featuring the different parts of the Borough, or the temporary displays, such as the present very interesting photographic exhibition on winter scenes in the countryside. Our Museum shows what a civilised Borough we live in. For it to close down would be a sad way of celebrating the 'Brighter Borougher'. It would be like the lights going out at the beginning of the last war! I thought that our society was more prosperous now than ever before. What's going wrong? |
