| Widening the discussion a liitle Julia, I really can't agree with the criticism of many politicians. For a start it is open to anyone to be a politician if they wish. They are just people like us. Secondly politicians have no real interest or benefit to themselves by taking us for a "ride". No benefit accrues to them. "Spin" is another matter - politicians obviously do have an interest in trying to get the best interpretation by the public of their actions. And look how careful they have to be not to speak out of turn. I don't particularly agree with Patrick Mercer, but there was little harm in what he said, but being candid - see where it has got him. Robin Cooke opposed the Iraq war,(quite rightly) but it got him or us nowhere. So in politics, as in many groups and big businesses, if you want to have influence you have to play your hand with great skill and care. Dear Julia, you have to face up to realities. |
