It wouldn’t the first time a city mayor’s anger at diesel pollution has steered a whole country toward petrol cars. The London Mayor is under acute pressure to reduce the pollution that endangers the capital’s health. Research revealed in April showed that people living in central London were three times more likely to die due to air pollution than those living in relatively traffic-free areas. Much of the killer toxins of nitrogen dioxide, related oxides of nitrogen, aka NOx, and particulate matter is released by diesel engines, according to figures released by the Mayor’s office, with ordinary private cars in the firing line. “Diesel has exacerbated greatly the air quality problem in London,” the mayor’s senior environment advisor, Matthew Pencharz, told The Telegraph. ........" |
