James, even if they are still in the driver's seat and the bus is stationary and idling that is already an offence under Boris's new 'no idling' regulations. If you see it again tell the garage manager and post it here again. The drivers have allegedly been told very firmly NOT to do it, anywhere. By the way, we (the Putney Society) have asked a number of times whether the garage could be moved elsewhere, but there does not appear to be another location which would offer anything more than the shifting of the problem to someone else's back yard, and probably cost a lot of money and create even more unnecessary journeys for buses thus raising overall emissions. Or so we keep being told. On the other point about pollution from aircraft, this is clearly a huge problem at ground level at Heathrow - just look at th air pollution map of London. But I have never seen any statistics identifying what component of local air pollution comes from planes flying overhead. Much of their emissions must dissipate and thus sensible measurement of the problem virtually impossible. At Heathrow, at ground level, it's much more cut and dried, but not under the flightpath. Happy to be proved wrong of course and TfL would be delighted to learn that it's not all the fault of the buses. |
