I live in Chelverton Road and it's rare to walk past the depot each night and not to see busses queuing to enter the garage. They are usually queuing on mass with engines running and drivers missing. Turning off engines while waiting or organising the busses to arrive in slots (via the radio!)would minimise pollution levels and cost nothing. The biggest scandal is that most busses operate with very few people on them. We like to delude ourselves that it's environmentally friendly to travel by bus but the statistics are worked out for a bus travelling each journey with maximum amounts of people, which is very rare. |
