The problem is that the higher PM limits allow the authorities to say "there is no problem, we are within the limits" and thus do nothing. I hope these lower limits do come in soon and are made to apply in places like Putney High Street. Going back to the Council's survey 35% of PMs in PHS come from cars (67% of traffic) while 21% comes from buses (10% of traffic). The other main source was light goods vehicles incl taxis (23% of PMs, 14% of traffic). So the sources are more widely spread and presumably the make-up of the PMs, not measured in this survey, is not just engine exhausts but also tyre and brake wear. |
