New research from Lancaster University; http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/es300826w - planting of vegetation in street canyons can reduce street-level concentrations in those canyons by as much as 40% for NO2 and 60% for PM. The GLA/TfL are carrying out pilot projects including this one on Edgeware Road. http://www.biotecture.uk.com/portfolio/TfL_Edgware_Road.html This type of installation would make a big improvement to planning proposals for the frontage of the Exchange. The height of The Exchange, relative to road width, creates the canyon effect found on PHS. Will WBC adopt a policy of reducing canyon effects, created by disproportionate development heights or not? My guess is not. Increasing the CC for diesel cars created a political sound bite, a diversion from not taking more radical action and would have minimal effect since we know that 80% of polution is from buses. There seems to be no such proposal to increase the CC for Vans, LGVs or HGVs. |
