This survey was most instructive. The worst pollution levels were in a driver's cab - presumably spending the day breathing in what the vehicle in front was pumping out. The most worrying one was the toddler's exposure levels (at near ground level) on his way to and from the nursery. The equipment used was a combined PM2.5 monitor and GPS locator strapped on to the volunteer's arm with literally minute-by-minute reports being generated of PM 2.5 levels throughout the day. One man went on a tube journey which showed very high levels of PM2.5 particles. The equipment did not however distinguish between different types of particle - some might even have been water vapour or condensation rather than 'black carbon' from vehicle exhausts or 'tube dust' so further work is needed to improve the quality of the results. The Putney Society has offered to carry our similar experiments locally - if we can get hold of the monitors for a time. I understand King's College have already sent two volunteers up and down our High Street using the same monitors but we haven't seen the data yet. |
