Tim, this is the first time I have seen any report attempt to estimate the effect of aircraft emissions on ground level pollution. Looking at the air pollution maps around Heathrow there is clearly a huge hotspot there but the patterns do not suggest levels on the ground reflect the location of flightpaths, just the aircraft on the ground and of course road traffic in the vicinity. It is very difficult to get away from the fact that both NO2 and PM concentrations come from predominantly from internal combustion engines - with home heating gas boilers and the like making a modest contribution to the total. Council modelling and the Putney Society's own survey point to fairly rapid dispersion once you get away from the kerbside, though we did identify higher concentrations in residential roads to the east of the High Street than to the west. So the prevailing winds seem to cause it to drift. |
