The exact survey results were than 10% of traffic comprised buses and they produced 68% of NOx emissions. Interestingly they produced only 21% of particulate (PM10) emissions. According to figures the Putney Society and the Council were given by TfL in Sept 2012 there are 228 buses operating on routes using the High Street and by March 2013 80% of these would be Euro 4 or equivalent. The balance of 20% will have been upgraded by the end of 2014. I am not sure if this upgrade programme is still on track but from the recent NO2 statistics either it is now running late or the desired improvements are not coming through. One final point - Putney High Street rightly receives a lot of attention because of its persistently high levels of NO2, but of course many other major roads, including some such as Oxford Street doubling as major shopping streets, suffer just as badly if not worse. The problem is that the levels of monitoring vary across the capital so it is not always evident how bad the air is on some roads. |
