Stephen, I think it is fair to say there has been some improvement in bus emissions, difficult though that may be to believe. Many more buses are either hybrids or have been retro-fitted with NO2-reducing equipment. There is debate as to whether these will deliver the necessary improvements in emissions but air quality monitoring shows that the air in the High Street is now a mere 2 1/2 to 3 times EU (yes - EU!) limits compared to up to 5 times the limits a few years ago. So, a bit better, but a long way to go. I fully agree that buses and taxis sitting with their engines running are a major source of the muck in our air. It is illegal to do this but the necessary enforcement does not seem to be happening. Hybrid buses' engines should switch off automatically but that seems to be under the driver's control and if they want to keep the engine running it looks like they can do so. |
