One of the many points you raise is about sources of pollution. Low flying aircraft and sewage works are red herrings; both the Putney Society air pollution survey and the Council's own monitors show on-street concentrations of NOx are far higher than those even a street or so away. West of PHS levels are within limits, east of PHS not so, or at least patchy, with high levels on our survey in Oxford Road (heavily used by cars, dare I say) The problem really seems to be diesel engines of all sizes. I agree it remains to be seen just how much cleaner the new buses will be and ongoing monitoring will eventually tell us. Meanwhile the Berlin experience of drastically reducing the numbers of diesel vehicles in the centre of the city and pushing the oldest diesels off the road altogether has brought some rapid gains - see the BBC programme I provided the link to. By the way, is this scaremongering too? http://www.standard.co.uk/lifestyle/london-life/economical-with-the-truth-8602844.html |
