And yet, a week on, no-one has even attempted a SWAG at the questions I asked. The Rolls Royce Trent is a very common engine variant for planes coming into Heathrow. Each engine is rated at 50-100,000 horsepower equivalent, and there are two or four on each aircraft. So each aircraft has an average performance of somewhere around 150,000 horsepower (a conservative estimate). Even allowing for a power factor of 10%, that's 15,000 hp, the equivalent of 60 unregulated buses. Every 30-40 seconds. Not only coming over at a height of 2-3000ft, but then heading upwind so the exhaust is blown back over Putney and South Fulham. In simple terms, the capacity for NO2 production directly over our heads is, even with a conservative estimate, of a similar scale to the total production by road traffic. And there seems to be an NO2 pattern in the measurements in Putney with the same time signature as inbound flights. D'ya think there might possibly be a reason? |
