We are not the only ones with a smog problem. This report from the Independent on air pollution in Paris makes instructive reading: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/here-is-a-warning-to-all-parisians-breathing-can-damage-your-health-9193089.html Their particular problem is diesel cars which have been fiscally encouraged by the French government despite strong and growing evidence that they are more polluting than petrol engined vehicles. Exactly our problem here. In France they are blaming the car lobby for the lack of political will and they are facing the same EU fines London is threatened with for having too little to improve air quality. Atmospheric conditions - high pressure and very low wind speeds - merely serve to highlight the extent of the problem. We really need to do something to deter people from buying diesel vehicles - now known not only for particulate emissions but also for exacerbating excessive levels of toxic NO2. |
