We need to be sure the promises to speed up the replacement of older buses are being kept and - if and when we can get hold of the equipment - there are plans for another Putney Society pollution monitoring exercise. Otherwise the dialogue with the council has moved to focus on local measures such as dealing with the delivery lorry problem, improved cycle parking and the other improvements for cyclists now the subject of your ever-growing thread, more trees and/or hanging baskets in PHS, and other enhancements to PHS (from the pedestrians' perspective) such as widening the pavements where practicable. A major concern is the future of air quality monitoring by the council. The money runs out at the end of this year and the last I heard was they have not secured new money to continue the current monitoring regime. DEFRA's approach seems to be to reduce monitoring so there is less evidence of the extent of the problem, all in the name of cutting red tape and regulation. |
