Tanks Tim. Creating a new category of emission zone will not make air quality in London noticeably better. Work for sign makers perhaps but not likely to stimulate London's economy either. As for "hybrid" busses, that usually means burning a combination of diesel and methane (aka natural or possibly bio-gas). Some improvement may result but not enough to bring London's air quality within World Health Organisation or EU Directive levels. Electric cars are a nonsensical thing to promote since they are disproportionately expensive and the electricity can as easily come from a coal fired power station producing damaging emmissions or a nuclear power station creating extremely long lived polution. The real positive though belatedly is that some politicians appear to be starting to wake up to reality. The real challenge for car manufacturers is not to produce low emission vehicles but to produce zero emmission vehicles that have good performance and a long range at an affordable price. Most of the majors are already trying to do just that and I doubt Boris's "challenge" will spur them on. |
