Roland, you should be careful about dismissing low-emission vehicles (cars at least). I have been able to study what can reasonably be called the first modern truly urban car. Unlike some things on the road, it is a 'proper' car - EuroNCAP 4-star predicted (and the crash test outperformed everything in its class, and the class above it), space for an average family's week shopping, all the creature comforts you would expect, and it drives pretty impressively as well. It has a proven 75mpg urban on petrol (a generic motor, not yet tuned for the car), 120+ expected for the diesel, and with the next generation small engines now starting to appear 150+ is easily in sight. Those are very serious numbers - already more efficient than all the poster-boy electric vehicles (using the Californian equivalence system), and with a defined path that takes them into another league. Emissions are through the floor. A mayor bold enough to create the new Routemaster platform should be bold enough to take up the licence and use this as the basis for his ULE taxicab. Especially as they could be on the road before the next election. |
