Ivonne, I absolutely agree with you that keeping the traffic moving is important in battling air pollution. I think the authorities are now aware that SCOOT doesn't work well when there's too much traffic so logically you have to find ways to reduce traffic volumes per se. The biggest % of traffic by vehicle is the private car so maybe that is where we should concentrate. Less traffic means the buses would not bunch up as much and attract more users because the journeys take less time. The big question is how do we minimise car use; most car journeys are 2 miles or less. Personally I hate driving in London and will do almost anything to avoid it! As for delivery lorries I would like to see the sort of time restrictions you suggest - they have done this for years in Germany so why not here? It was actually trialled in London during the Olympics and the world didn't grind to a halt. I know the council is talking to local businesses about all this but progress is slow. |
