It tends to be horses for courses. Diesels have had advantages for lower CO2 emissions and accordingly have been incentivised in previous taxation regimes. But what works well for bombing up and down rural motorways does appallingly badly (particularly when driven aggressively ) in town. The message needs to get out that it isn't sensible to use big diesels if most of your driving is done in the city and that it probably won't be long before fiscal measures reinforce that - it may be very expensive to choose to continue to do it .
