Roland, I have a busy working life but I commute by shank's pony to the station and then by train and tube. OK I admit if it's raining or I'm in a blinding hurry I might cadge a lift off my better half. I certainly wouldn't drive to work though I know people who do. It doesn't save them any time. But the broader point is that we are a totally car-centred society so how else do we deal with air pollution, which as we know comes largely from traffic fumes, other than by getting out the car from time to time? If you've got heavy shopping a car is fairly essential, but you could try the option of using the bus (some people do manage) or having it delivered. If your kids need to be ferried to school, you could try the option of walking them or cycling with them (more people are doing this though that's difficult to believe if you go past one of our local schools at the end of the school day). The list goes on. I agree a regular diesel bus pollutes more than a car but per capita a bus with 10-20 people or more in it chucks out less on average. And as you may have read on this site we will soon be getting low-emission and hybrid buses on local routes which will go a long way towards addressing the worst of the problem. |
