Ivonne, you may find this difficult to believe but the sequencing of the lights has been computer-controlled for at least a year. The Council installed a SCOOT system which is designed to smooth traffic flow so that you can, in theory, drive from one end of PHS to the other once the first light has turned green. Of course it all falls down when traffic volumes swamp the road, and that is what we experience there most of the time. Buses and delivery vehicles are a big part of the problem but I don't think there is an easy solution to either. The Putney Society has been engaging with the council for some time on the issues of air quality, traffic congestion and the street environment in general. You can see some of our correspondence on our website. |
