Standing in the shower, I thought of another way to approach this: worst worst case: NOx emission =5-25g/kg fuel (use max of 25g) a380 range=15,700 km a380 fuel capacity=320,000 litres fuel/km=20litre per km approx fuel density=0.8 kg/litre fuel/km=16kg NOx/km=400g Heathrow planes/day=1300 (call them all a380s!) Total daily NOx/km=520kg At a height of 3000m, 520kg to spread through cylinder volume pi x 3000 x 3000x 1000, giving concentration NOx of approx 1/60,000g per cubic metre or 20micro-gram/cubic metre I haven't checked this arithmetic at all. Biggest approximation is assuming fuel use is constant - actually far more is used ascending than coming in to land. On the basis of the above, I really do not think aircraft have much to do with Putney's NO2 levels. |
