Domestic and to a lesser extent industrial heating emissions are the main non-traffic source. The air pollution maps of London, where all the readings are taken at ground level, show a concentrated area of high emissions in and around Heathrow. This comes not just from aircraft emissions but also vehicle traffic around the airport. I do not know of any conclusive evidence of the extent to which overflying aircraft contribute to pollution levels on the ground. One must suspect there is a correlation somewhere but the Heathrow concentrations are restricted to the immediate surrounds of the airport and its service roads - so that could be a clue. |
