"Good point, Thomas: I hadn't noticed that the tunnel would be toll-paying..." So would the proposed Silvertown Tunnel, which would require tolls to be introduced on Blackwall as well. TfL dimly realise that building new road capacity won't alleviate congestion unless you price enough people off it, but obviously that risks the M6 Toll problem of everyone avoiding it... "I've raised a separate thread on the tunnel ("A new lunatic road plan...") as I was so astonished at an apparently serious attempt to establish such a crazy plan." It's what you get if you set up a study group whose remit specifically excluded integrated transport planning. It's actually at the behest of property companies who want the value of land next to the Inner Ring Road to rise - no one appears to have joined the dots to work out why hard-nosed property developers understand that being less accessible to cars now makes land more valuable (and, conversely, the ten areas scheduled to have a massive intrusive road tunnel entrance plonked on them less valuable). |
