Ms Whitehead It's all politics. If there were a Labour Government, Boris, Cllr Lister and Justine Greening would be apoplectic in calling for the scheme to be cancelled as a profligate waste of money. (Remember the Heathrow third runway issue?). But as it is their party that is driving the scheme and should have the power to stop it, it just comes back to nimbyism. So we have the amusing spectacle of one Tory Council Wandsworth against another, Fulham. Fulham does not want to use their brown field site (an obvious choice I would have thought) because as I understand it they want to do what Wandsworth does - fill the riverbank with luxury flats and keep the Council tax low. All this being said, I have every sympathy with the affected Putney residents and using green space seems a nonsense. Still as Thames Water is a private company, owned by an Australian bank I believe, can even the Government stop them ? |
