Hammersmith was the first choice; they had waste land and wharves available. However, Hammersmith and Fulham Council have been very pro-active in campaigning against the main tunnel construction site being situated in Hammersmith, even going so far as gathering a petition of 2000 objections from local residents. They've been doing this for 2 years ! Have a look at their website...they are crowing that their actions have had the main site moved to our Borough. It appears Thames Water, frightened of this opposition decided on Barn Elms on the border of Wandsworth and Richmond Boroughs. And what with the Richmond and Wandsworth Councils? It appears they've been fast asleep on this issue and have woken up too late to stop this enviromental disaster developing on our doorsteps. Yes, build the Thames Tunnel - its needed, but not at the expense of digging up Barn Elms and turning it into a massive building project the impact of which will rival the building of the Channel Tunnel. |
