The river is much improved, but the great progress that has been achieved in recent decades - in part due to the massive investment of Thames Water customers' money at sewage treatment works throughout the catchment - will be reversed if we allow the sewers through central London tp overflow into the river. The 'polluting load' of the combined sewer overflows in west London mean the Thames Tunnel is essential. You may not always see the discharges - they often occur below the water line - but they happen - and will increase in frequency if we do not get on and build the tunnel sooner rather than later. Remember, the 39 million tonnes figure is in a typical year - it can be two to three time more in wetter years. Future generations will not thank us if we fail to tackle this growing problem. The Victorians gave us a great legacy, but we have relied on it for too long. It must be updated to meet the city's modern-day needs. Discharging so much sewage into the river cannot be right in anyone's book. |
