I have been to speak with them today. Actually I was quite impressed with the level of knowledge of the staff there - I though they'd just send their PR people. The exhibition itelf is all marketing spin though. Dig deeper with questioning and essentailly it appears that Hammermith was the original choice and I was told it was essentailly down to cost becuse all the waste from creation of the main shaft would have to be taken away by barge and not road. Also bulding the main shaft at Hammersmith would be of significant increased cost because of value of the site for potential developers to build offices? They are yet to do an enviromental assesment with regard to wetlands centre but they conceded there would be impact to all local residents and environment with noise, traffic, closure of towpath at certain times and limitation of use of the stretch of the river for leisure use in particular rowing. I think the only thing we can do is to push for the original Hammersmith site to be the site of choice and ensure they are open about the real reasons they decided against it. |
