Simple...Because it's cheap. Public land, no problem. The alternative over the river in Hammersmith is in private hands. TW has the power to aquire it for the 7 year project (at a significant lease cost) but prefer the cheap alternative at Barn Elms. For those interested in seeing the Hammersmith site...It's 100 yards this side of Hammersmith Bridge on the north bank. Surrounded by green wooden hordings. Lots of gaps to peer through, and you will see this enormous flattened building site just perfect for the tunnelling operations. Not overlooked by houses, just offices close by. Also you will note the built up river wall where a wharf would sit perfectly for the removal of spoil. Thames Water is desperate not to have to pay a large lease for this site which is why they are gunning for Barn Elms. |
