I asked this question to one of the people on the stand in Putney Exchange today. They said this was one of the things that would be looked at under consultation. I asked if it was going to be permanent and if so, given it reaches almost half way into the river how they thought that would impact the Boat Race. The replay was that people had expressed an interest in the wharf being a permanent asset for future use and that they may look at removing barges during the race. This implies that when barges are being loaded and unloaded half the river will be take up. Personally I think the wharf should go when the work is complete. It's a lame excuse that it might be of use afterwards when the slipway is of much more practical use for rowers, as it is at present. I would suggest the bare minumum that should remain is a facility to load and unload at high tide so only requiring a quayside such as exists outside the Harrods Depository. Anyone with an interest should register on the website: www.thamestunnelconsultaion.co.uk and fill in the questionnare. |
