These construction works will be immense, and I'm not sure the people of Putney and Barnes are fully aware of the consequences. Thames Water say they will build a pier adjacent to the Barn Elms works to remove the construction materials by river, but it is actually impractical to do so. If they did manage it, the tow path would be blocked and closed, the rowers would be faced with extreme danger from a working wharf. It won't be built whatever Thames Water say. Therefore contruction lorrys will fill our streets for 7 years as all the spoil from the tunnel will be removed from the Barn Elms site. Roads will be gridlocked. The noise and dust and will mean walks along the tow path and around Barn Elms will be impossible. These are HUGE works for this area...Remember the vast craters when the Channel Tunnel was built? This isn't much different. It appears Wandsworth and Richmond Councils have been caught off guard here. For 2 years Hammersmith & Fulham have been lobbying against the main tunnelling site being situated in their Borough...and guess what...It's now being loctated adjacent to Putney. The ideal Location would be Hammersmith where there are existing wharfs and riverside wasteland where the impact would be far less. |
