I visited the stand in the shopping mall and have read the brochures. I really don’t see how they will be able to construct this tunnel efficiently without using Barn Elms as the main drive site. Although no site will be “ideal”, it does have many advantages, mainly the size. I don’t believe there will be a lot of noise from the site, perhaps a bit initially, but not much as the core works are happening below ground. I think the effect to Horne Way will be minimal and it will be no nosier that urban London already is from background noise, aircraft etc. I do not believe there will be any smell from the vents. If anything the smell will be less than you currently get because the vents will be filtered – this is not the case with the current situation of raw sewage pouring into the river. I hope they do not build a jetty there. This will have a huge impact on an otherwise rare undeveloped stretch of river bank, as well as meaning likely closure of the toe path. Road haulage is a better option here. I see a lot of speculation on here about the increase in road traffic this will cause – does anyone have any actual figures on the number of lorries leaving the site per day carrying spoil away? E.g. if the TBM makes 10m per day, and it’s 7m diameter, that means ~120 cubic meters per day, which means ~12 lorries/day… (or 100 lorries or 1000, etc etc). We should also see what we can get back out of this. For example, we could offer our support for the use of the site, on the condition that a new sports pavilion is built when the works are complete, or the running track is redeveloped, or some sort of lasting useful facility is funded. The works in total will cost £3.5bn, so what’s another £5m? They may save that through legal fees if we offer consent rather than objection, therefore a no-brainer to TW. Any thoughts? |
