From Wandswoth Council's report on the Tunnel: "Through their consultation material Thames Water have stated that detailed studies are being carried out to make sure that the tunnel doesn’t smell. The tunnel ventilation system will be designed to meet modern stringent standards particularly for hydrogen sulphide and concentrations of other gases that cause odour. The buildings to be included as part of the legacy include buildings to house ventilation equipment, which will draw air out of the tunnel and pass it through filters – removing the bad odours gases – before discharging the cleaner air into the atmosphere via a ventilation column. Thames water claim that this keeps the air in the tunnel fresh and clean to prevent odours from building up. At some sites ventilation columns are proposed to ensure that any air that comes out of the tunnel is discharged high up, away from people on the ground and at a level where it can quickly disperse and not cause a nuisance". Independent verification would be useful. Of course "The Great Stink" referred to the river itself and this is what the Tunnel is said to be about. |
