I visited the exhibition in Putney Exchange this morning and was impressed with the amount of information available to collect and take away to read and also with the number of helpful Thames Water people there to answer questions. It really is so important for anyone concerned about this enormous project to visit the exhibition to learn all about it. The impact of the building works on Putney will be very significant. The Putney Embankment conservation area will be seriously affected. The Putney Society organised a public meeting on the Thames Tunnel project, held in the Brewer Building in June 2009 - when the proposals were being worked up to what they are today. I discussed with the Thames Water people whether a second public meeting could usefully be organised by the Society - they agreed that they would be happy to come along to make a presentation. The Society's Open Spaces Panel is meeting tonight to begin considering what ought to be done on this challenging issue and to start to work out a Putney Society response. I will suggest that a Brewer Building public meeting would be useful. One interesting detail I was told today by the Thames Water representative is that the Barn Elms site that has been identified as the major site for construction work is, in fact, owned by Wandsworth Borough Council, even though it is in Richmond Borough. This poses the question, what would the relationship be between our borough council and Thames Water if this project proceeds? |
